Scuola Grande di San Rocco in Venice

Architecture, art and Venetian history come together in the monumental rooms of this historic confraternity, which have remained remarkably unchanged over the centuries.

More than sixty paintings can still be seen in their original locations, making a visit both immersive and essential for anyone interested in 16th-century Venetian painting.

The history of the confraternity

The lay confraternity dedicated to Saint Roch was founded in 1478 and recognised as a Scuola Grande by the Council of Ten in 1480. Devotion to the saint, traditionally invoked for protection against the plague, grew further after one of his relics arrived in Venice in 1485.

As the confraternity gained prestige and financial resources, construction of a new monumental headquarters began in 1517. The project developed in several stages and involved architects including Pietro Bon, Sante Lombardo and Antonio Abbondi, known as Scarpagnino. Some of the building’s most distinctive features, including the façade and monumental staircase, are associated with his work.

The Scuola Grande di San Rocco is the only one of Venice’s historic Scuole Grandi to have continued its activities after the fall of the Venetian Republic. It still retains its identity as a confraternity today and continues its traditional charitable and welfare work.

Tintoretto’s cycle

The relationship between the Scuola and Jacopo Tintoretto began in 1564, when the artist painted Saint Roch in Glory for the ceiling of the Sala dell’Albergo. It marked the beginning of a collaboration lasting more than twenty years, during which Tintoretto gradually decorated the building’s principal rooms.

The Sala dell’Albergo contains the monumental Crucifixion of 1565, one of Tintoretto’s most celebrated works. Filling an entire wall, the composition surrounds the figure of Christ with a complex narrative of people, gestures and dramatic contrasts of light.

The Sala Capitolare, where members of the confraternity once gathered, contains an extensive pictorial programme devoted to episodes from the Old and New Testaments. In the Sala Terrena, the final room to be decorated, eight large canvases depict scenes from the life of the Virgin and the childhood of Christ, including the Annunciation, Adoration of the Magi and Flight into Egypt.

The visit makes it possible to follow Tintoretto’s artistic development from 1564 to 1587, observing at close range his theatrical use of light, daring perspectives and extraordinary narrative energy.

More than Tintoretto

The visit includes the Sala Terrena, the monumental staircase, the Sala Capitolare and the Sala dell’Albergo. The Scuola also preserves works associated with artists such as Giorgione, Titian and Tiepolo, as well as its Treasury and other objects documenting the history of the confraternity.

Next to the Scuola stands the Chiesa di San Rocco, which can be visited separately or with a combined ticket.
